The Wedding Blog is Up

It's amazing how fast time has flown since Billy proposed...the wedding is now less than 3 weeks away.  There is still soooo much to do!  But, the wedding blog is up and running.  You can catch it here: http://j-bworththewait.blogspot.com/.

Engagement Photos

In between billing over 200 hours and working about 250 hours during September, the wedding planning has rolled forward.  Thankfully, Billy took the lead on the engagement photos (which will also be used to create our guestbook); and, we have 3 friends here in LA who are amateur photographers (two of whom work in the entertainment world...both behind the camera and editing) who have graciously volunteered to take engagement photos of us in various locations around LA.  Yesterday was our first photo shoot.  Here's a preview (unedited and un-retouched) of what we got yesterday.  We are VERY happy with the results and can't wait to see what else is to come.

Planning a Wedding

is a lot of work!  No matter how many things I get checked off of my list, there are about a hundred more that get added on daily...or so it seems!

I promise to upload photos and more soon!

Just the Two of Us

For those of you who aren't on FB...a few photos of Billy and me.

These first two are, obviously, from the stay in the hospital...as you can see, he had a hard time taking a serious picture during the hospital stay...(of course, that can be a problem at any time we are trying to take pictures...)

This photo is from my office's summer party which was the BB King concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

And, this one is thanks to Billy's friend Johanna.  It was taken at the Nora Jones Concert last night at the Greek.

Yes...we do have a lot of fun together!

Update...

The hospital stay lasted until about 5 p.m. Saturday night.  I was soooooo ready for us to be out of there by the time they let Billy check out!  He has a clean bill of health (with the addition of a baby aspirin and Lipitor every day) and no restrictions.  He's going back in this week for one more out-patient test, but otherwise, everything looks good.  And, he feels great!

Thanks to everyone for your care and concern!

UCLA Medical Center

I'm typing this post from UCLA's Ronald Reagan Medical Center.  No, I'm not the one who has been admitted--that would be the boyfriend!  I've been to the Emergency Room twice in my life and both times have been with him--the first for kidney stones Memorial Day weekend and the 2nd yesterday because the right side of his body went numb (yah...not a good thing).  Turns out he had a small stroke (a TIA) in the sensory portion of his brain.  After 9-9 1/2 hours in the ER, they admitted him to the hospital for further testing.  We hope he will be released tonight, but we'll see what the doctor says about the test results.  He's been poked, prodded, ultrasouned, etc. all night and day.  It's been an interesting process to watch, but not one that I care to repeat.  And, quite frankly, if I never see the inside of another ER in my life, it will be too soon!

4th of July

On Saturday, July 3, Billy surprised me with box seats to the Vince Gill/Los Angeles Philharmonic 4th of July Concert at the Hollywood Bowl.  Our seats were awesome; and, we had a great time!  It was one of those "perfect" evenings together!

.
We started the evening with a picnic at a small table in the box.  (Because he was studying for the Bar, and without knowing where we were going, I made the picnic dinner...fried chicken, German potato salad, tomato mozzarella salad, and chocolate-dipped strawberries and marshmallows.  YUM!)
Prior to the start of the concert, Bowl staff come and take the table down so that you can sit next to each other through the concert.
You can see that the lights in the Bowl changed as the evening progressed to match the music of the evening.
There was a military band that played with the Phil that night as well.
The Vince Gill part of the evening was a real sacrifice for Billy because he is NOT a country music fan!
The fireworks were fantastic!

T-34 Hours

Big prayers are in order because in just 34 hours, Billy will begin the California Bar Exam.  It's been a very long 4 months of studying while we've been dating!  I'll be very grateful when the exam is finished!  But, I'm also sooooo grateful that it's not me taking it this time around.  Watching Billy study has brought back so many repressed memories of my own experience, fears, and anxieties related to the Bar.  I feel so blessed to have passed the first time around!

Friendship has its Benefits...

So, my friend Barbara is the director/administrator/grand pooh-bah in charge of the Burbank Temporary Aid Center--a non-profit that helps homeless people.  I've spent quite a bit of time supporting the agency and attending events related to it with Barbara.  One of the best events, though, is the occasional movie screening on the Warner Brothers' Lot.  Tonight, one day before the nation-wide release, we are seeing Inception.  I hope it lives up to its hype.  I'm fearful, though, that the storyline may be a little to play-with-your-head, Matrix-like for me.  Regardless, it's always fun to be on the Lot!

Eclipse

I've now seen it 3 times!  I know that's crazy, but it is the best of the Twilight movies...and, I had lots of people to see it with...Emily and then Billy and then my mom, aunt and 3 sisters-in-law.

The Twilight Saga Continues...

So, I saw Eclipse last night.  It was BY FAR the best of the 3 Twilight movies!  The characters were developed better; the connections between the characters were better; and, the effects were WAY better!  That last part may also have had something to do with the fact that I saw it in IMAX!  It was a great way to see this particular movie!  I'm sure I'll see it at least twice more while it's in the theatres because I'll see it with my mom and sisters-in-law next week and Billy and I will probably see it after he takes the Bar.  I'm not sure it's really worth paying to see 3 times in the theatre, but it'll be fun nonetheless.

As a side note, while I'm definitely an Edward fan in the books; I'm a Jacob fan all the way in the movies.  Taylor is a WAY better actor and so much better looking than Rob.

My friend Emily is a total Twilight geek.  I went to see the movie with her last night, which was fun.  And, she shared this with me today...thought I'd pass it along.  For those of you who've read the books and/or seen the movies, I'm sure you will get a chuckle out of this.

Today is a MUCH better day...

I got to go on a brisk walk last night and, between the walk and our time afterwards, spend 3 hours talking with a certain boy last night who took time off from his Bar studies for me.  I also got the decision today from from my due process hearing in May...and, we won!!!!!  YEAH!!!!!

(And, the best part is that I did not cry and I did not eat any Ben and Jerry's in this process!)

Life

My friend Jessica wrote a post on Monday that started like this..."You know when you have those days and you just want to cry? Or eat ice cream? Or cry and then eat ice cream?  Yep, today is that day."  That's totally how I feel today...and, how I felt yesterday, too.

I'm simply overwhelmed by everything...life, work (June 30 is the end of our billable year and I'm behind on hours AND work is flowing in at rate faster than anyone can handle right now AND my friend Rachel announced her departure from the firm AND my friend Vivian is not coming back from maternity leave), life, my lack of desire to diet and/or exercise, life, Young Women's, life, etc.

It's been a really long time since I have felt like I just want to go home and curl up with a pint of Ben and Jerry's and cry.  But, today is definitely one of those days.

Sigh...better get back to work!

The Cliffs' Note Version of My Life in 2010...Bringing You All up to Date

So, I know my blog entries have been scarce for the past few months.  Part of the problem is that it takes so darned long to upload photos to my blog and it's so much easier to post them on Facebook.  So, that's usually where I post them these days.

I've decided that "normal" for me is living life at a frenetic pace where there's barely time to keep my head above water and that things like blogging, scrapbooking, and quilting will likely always take a backseat to everything else.  So, I've quit expecting myself to get it all done...I'll get there eventually...just not today.  That change in attitude has been a great change!

I have had little time to travel this year...I haven't been home to Modesto since Christmas.  And, with Eric & Sheree now living in Modesto, my semi-annual trip to D.C. this Spring did not happen.  But, as my previous blog posts have indicated, my friend Tracy came to visit me in January and my friend Janell came to visit in February.  This weekend my friend Collette is visiting and Eric, Sheree, and Tyler are coming next weekend.  This summer, I will head home for the week after the 4th of July...I also hope to head to NYC for a long weekend with a few of my LA girlfriends and to take a strip to SLC to see the many friends who live in Utah.  I also expect visits from Tracy and Janell this summer and hope to see Jared, Cindy, Jack, and Kate visit as well.  I'm looking forward to a fun and full summer.

I am still the Young Women's President for the 3 wards in my building at church.  After 2 years in this calling, I am finally feeling sort of comfortable in my own skin in the calling. I truly LOVE my girls and am so grateful for the opportunities this calling has given me. I work with an amazing group of women who span an amazing age range and who are of multiple cultures. I have learned so much from all of them. And, the girls are amazing, too. I have learned so much from theml. It's almost tough to imagine having any other calling.  It is a calling, though, that takes up ALOT of my time.  Except for the 1st week, I spent every Tuesday evening, all day Saturday, and much of Sunday in April with these girls.  We had great fun with a rummage sale and with a day in Disneyland (as a result of our Give-a-Day-Get-a-Day service project in January).

I've also gotten involved with the Stake mid-singles (age 28-45) group at church, which has provided me the opportunity to meet some great people and to start (after 3 1/2 years) to feel comfortable living here in LA. I am a teacher for the mid-singles Sunday School class once month, which I am also really enjoying. And, it gives me a good "excuse" to read and study my scriptures.

I continue to be very busy at work, but Young Women's and MSA activities have forced some balance into my life that is really good and healthy. It's good to have an excuse to get out of the office. The problem is that this balance has lead to a place where I am behind on my hours.  For the first time EVER in my career as an attorney, I have hours to make up between now and June 30 when our year ends.  So, while it was brutal to work over 130 hours in the first 2 weeks of May because of a due process hearing, I needed to do it to make up for other activities in months prior.  I've got a ways to go still, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I should be able to hit 1800 for the year by June 30.

And, just when I didn't think I could fit one more thing in, I started dating a friend of mine here in LA.  We are in the same Stake at church, but not in the same ward--we actually go to church in separate buildings (me, close to downtown; he, on the West side by the temple).  He's actually someone I went to law school with; so, we've known each other for 9 1/2 years.  His name is Billy Gonzalez.  (No, Billy is not actually his legal name...but, that's a long story for an entirely different post.)  He's been a really good friend here in LA.  And, has been diligently trying to get me to date him since last September.  I wasn't interested then; perhaps, you could say the timing just wasn't right.  But, sometime in March, I started to wonder if I was making a mistake...we were such good friends and maybe I should give him a chance...what did I have to lose...if it worked out, I would only have something to gain!  So, I took the leap and we have been dating for the past 2 months. It's such a new and unusual experience to date someone that I'm friends with, whom I trust, am completely comfortable with, and with whom I can communicate openly and freely.  It's a very welcome change--one that makes life so much happier and one that puts all of this other crazy, busy-ness into a much better perspective.  This has been the main reason behind my prior statements and postings like "Life is what happens when you are making other plans."  It's also taught me that the saying is really true...when you least expect it...

So, life is good; 2010 and being 38 are shaping into VERY different things than I expected.  I'm excited to see what the remainder of the year holds!

For inquiring minds who want to know, here's a photo of the two of us with our friend Rozanna from last summer at the Hollywood Bowl.

She Passed!!!!!

I'm am so excited that I'm beyond words...my friend Janell passed the Bar.  She so deserves this.  Now, we can plan a trip for her to come to visit me in LA this summer just for fun...no more attempts at passing the California Bar.  Congrats Janell and welcome to the world of lawyering!

Life is What Happens When You are Making Other Plans

This really should be the motto of my life...I'm considering where/how I could display it in large print in a place that I will see it regularly because if I could remember this little motto/life's lesson more often, I'm sure I would be less frustrated about some things in life.

100 Posts!

Hey!  That last post was number 100!  Feeling pretty proud of myself for getting to 100.  OK, now it's time to get back to work...

Medical Procedure #2

Seriously, this getting older thing is for the birds...yesterday, I had my first experience with anesthesia and an endoscopy.  Not the worst experience of my life, but I don't relish a life with these new procedures.

No photo befitting this experience...

Oh the joys of getting older and being female...first mammogram today...  Enough said!

End of an Era

Today's announcement that Justice John Paul Stevens is retiring from the Supreme Court oddly brought back way too many memories of Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, and Advanced Appellette Brief Writitng from law school.  He has had an amazing influence on the shaping of law and history in the United States.  Regardless of whether I agree with all of his decisions, he is a brilliant man!  It's sad to see these truely great and brilliant legal minds all retiring from the Court.  The most recent appointees just can't seem to compete.

Why won't it just fold itself???

It's bad enough that I have to wash it every week...why can't it just fold and put itself away????  It would make my life so much easier (and, happier, too).

Update on My Nephews

Melissa posted some really cute photos of Aiden and Austin in their new Easter ties that Melissa made for them as well as some photos of Jack and Aiden playing in the weeds at The Place. Rather than reposting them, I will use my new-found love of links to send you to her blog.

New/Old Post

How time flies...it's been almost a month since I wrote a post about my friend Janell's visit to LA. However, I didn't want to post it until I got the photos attached. I finally did that this morning. You can read the post here.

Edward Alma Lee Goodwin

I hope that my cousin doesn't mind me sharing the following...somehow, sharing it makes me feel like my heart isn't quite so heavy...and, it's so much better than crying (which, I've done, too).

My cousin Diane (and her twin sister Denise) is just 6 months older than me. She and I have been inseparable at times in our lives and have (usually) been great friends! Our friendship was really solidified while I was in law school at BYU. Diane was living in Orem. We had season football tickets together each year; and, we were both single, so we would frequently get together to hang out--watch movies, go to dinner, BYU volleyball games, etc.

Shortly after I graduated from law school, Diane married Chad Goodwin. She and Chad are a great couple--their personalities and strengths compliment each other well. After a miscarriage and thinking they would never have children, Diane found out that she was expecting...a little boy. I found out right after Christmas; and, I was so excited for Diane! Unfortunately, however, these things do not always turn out the way we want them to.

Edward Alma Lee Goodwin was born yesterday, March 16, 2010, at 3:30 a.m. Despite a typical number of weeks of development in utero and a healthy birthweight, he had multiple other health problems, including under-developed lungs. He lived only until 4:45 a.m.

Medical explanations aside, I will never understand why Edward lived such a short time. Diane (and Chad) deserved the chance to have and to raise this little boy in this lifetime. I do know that, at times like these, I am grateful for a knowledge of the Plan of Salvation, which assures us that Edward's short life served a purpose. We know that he was able to come to Earth to receive a body. We also know that his mom and dad will have the opportunity to raise him in the next life. In the meantime, he is well-looked-after by his Grandpa Keith Durfey who preceded him in death shortly before Christmas this past year and his Great Grandma Carpenter who passed away just over a year ago.

This afternoon, Chad sent out a few photos of Edward. The photographer did a fantastic job! (The hospital has a photographer that families can use in these types of situations.) He's darling!

I Get By With Alot of Help from My Friends

This post is about my friend Janell. You can read her blog here. Her journey is by no means over, but what a journey it has been thus far.

Janell and I met on day one of law school orientation in 2000. Orientation was grouped according to legal writing sections; and, Janell and I were in the same section. And, somehow we ended up being friends. I think we were drawn together, in part, because we were single (as were the others we ended up in a group of friends with from that section...Collette, Taeya, Aleea, Jay, and Jason).

After a frustrating 1 1/2 years of law school, Janell registered for a semester abroad in Australia the 2nd semester of our 2nd year. Shortly after arriving in Australia, she met the man of her dreams and was married a few short months later.

About 2 1/2 years ago, Janell went back to law school, finishing 2 years worth of courses online. And, about 1 1/2 years ago, shortly after having her 3rd child, she moved with her family from Australia to Indiana where her husband had been accepted to graduate school in psychology.

If you read Janell's blog, you will see that in the last year and a half, her life has been anything but easy. Her husband, who suffers from an intense and debilitating depression, has decided that he is agnostic. So, he no longer attends church with his family. But, Janell, who is the early morning seminary teacher for the youth, attends church each week with her kids and ensures that they participate in family home evening and are taught the basic principals of the gospel. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which was removed, and resulted in the loss of hearing in her right ear. Her oldest son has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. And, her daughter has yet to be diagnosed with anything related to an intense leg pain that they thought could be leukemia or something of that nature (so far the doctors have only ruled a very long list of things out). Of course, in the middle of all of this, Janell graduated from law school, which meant studying for the Bar.

Because of the way Janell went back to school, she has to pass the California Bar before she can take any other state's Bar. So, late last Spring, Janell began studying full time. She took the Bar in July. Unfortunately, the result received in November (only about 15 points away from passing) meant that she had to turn around and do it all again to take the Bar in February, which she did this past week.

Janell has an amazing outlook on life. Instead of allowing her trials to make her angry and bitter, she has turned to the Lord and found a humility and solace that few individuals would be able to find in her same situation. And, she has remained optistic, hopeful, and above all, positive. She is an inspiration to me. If we talk when I am feeling down about things, I let her talk first because after I hear about the events of a typical week for Janell, my problems seem so small and insigificant and I feel badly for not being able to dig in and have the same positive outlook for my life/situation.

After both July and February's Bars, I have been fortunate to spend about 36 hours with Janell. It is sooo much fun! I LOVE talking with Janell and spending time with her. This time, my goal was to see how pampered Janell could be by the end our time together. I picked her up from her hotel on Thursday night and took her Tito's Tacos...then it was home to my house for Survivor and little R&R. Friday morning, we headed out to Santee Alley for a little shopping (yes, I did come home with 4 new purses...what can I say?!?!?!); lunch at Potato Chips with dessert from Yogurtland (I LOVE the new red velvet cupcake flavor); home to change clothes for the afternoon/evening; manicures and pedicures (a FIRST for Janell--can you believe that?!!?!? It's criminal really...BUT, she understands now that it is possible to wear sandals and like your feet ;); Dear John at the AMC in Century City; dinner at Gaucho Grill in Brentwood with Billy...and, last, but certainly not least...massages (I LOVE that you can get a massage a reputable establishment at 10 p.m. in LA)! Saturday morning, we headed out to breakfast with Billy at Quality and then it was time to take Janell to the airport.

I truly hope that Janell passes the Bar this time...she deserves it! Her kids deserve it! While I would love to have her come back to visit, I'd rather have it be just for fun.

Love you Janell!

Murphy's Law

So, yesterday was ugly, gray, and cold (for LA) with rain in the forecast for last night and today. So, about noon yesterday, I spoke with the other YW leaders and we cancelled our trip to Disneyland--to be postponed until later this Spring. It rained cats and dogs last night; but, of course, the sun shone all day today. My girls were NOT happy! But, had we not postponed, it would have rained today...

Proud to Be an American

Evan Lysacek is a class act! In addition to his amazing performance on Thursday night in men's long program, his interview last night during the Olympic coverage was humble and mature. It's too bad that Evgeni Plushenko can't show the same respect for his sport and the other competitors in the field!

Hopeless Romantic

I admit that I am a hopeless, sappy romantic; and, I LOVE chick flicks. Thanks to my friend Barbara, I got to see this one at a screening on the Warner Bros. lot last night. It's so much fun to be on the lot...makes me feel way more important and connected than I am. I guess I just choose my friends appropriately. ;) Anyway, I digress...Valentine's Day is a pretty good as far as chick flicks go...some predictability, some surprises, and you CANNOT beat the cast! It was also fun that it was filmed entirely in the LA area...it's always fun to recognize the sites as they pop up on the screen.

One of the things that is fun about the WB screenings is that they always do an intro with insider information about the movie. This movie was all about being green. It was fascinating to hear how much they did with solar panels, biodiesel and recycling. Here's an article about it:

"The production is among the first in the film industry to consciously “go green” in a major way and try to lessen its environmental impact.

Executive Producer Diane Pokorny was largely responsible for spearheading the project’s green initiative, which extended from director and cast to the entire crew. It encompassed virtually every aspect of production, including the use of reusable set pieces, solar-powered lighting, hybrid or biodiesel vehicles, solar and biodiesel generators, and biodegradable plates and utensils at craft services. The crew even composted or recycled 25 tons of waste. Every member of the cast and crew was given his or her own reusable stainless -steel water bottle, eliminating the need for thousands of plastic bottles during the production.

'Every department was very proactive about coming back to us with ideas on what they could do, and we also had the strong back of Warner Bros, which was key. We met with [Warner Bros. Pictures sustainable production manager] Jon Romano about how to make the entire production more environmentally responsible,' said Pokorny. 'It’s not only about making a difference now; it’s about creating technologies and methods that will continue to be improved upon for the next movie. And so on. It was exciting for everyone involved in the film because they could see the tangible differences they can make.'

...Warner Brothers estimates that it reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 67 metric tons. Filmmakers explain that the solar generators increased the costs, but otherwise the movie did not cost more to make.

'There are a lot of things wrong with our environment, so to ‘go green’ seemed to be a very good thing. It’s not that big and effort; if we could do it, others can do it,' Marshall says."

Amazing Race

I love this show; but this season, I'm particularly excited that this team is playing...I know, I'm a geek...I just loved them on Big Brother, so it's exciting to see them on the race. However, there is going to be a contest between Jordan and the Miss Teen contestant for who can say the stupidest thing on The Race! Seriously, girls...you do nothing for showing the intelligence of the female portion of the human race!

Oh yes I am...

Stay tuned...after way too much time figuring out the "system" on my part, my young women did a service project for the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (we made 302 sack lunches for the homeless) and I'm taking them to Disneyland on Saturday...should be a wild and crazy day!

Not enough hours in the day!

I LOVE the Olympics. Perhaps its watching people accomplish tasks I don't even dream of accomplishing. I mean, I can't even skate around an ice rink once without something (or someone) to hold on to; so, the idea of things like triple or quadruple toe loops is unfathomable to me. Don't even ask about my abilities on skis...I've been once and it wasn't pretty! And, the Summer Olympics aren't any better...just ask my mom how successful swim lessons were when I was growing up...I'm not going to drown in the water, but I'm also not going to successfully swim laps using any stroke!

Perhaps its watching the world come together in the spirit of good old-fashioned competition.

I don't know...I just love watching them.

The trouble is that work is suddenly busier than it's been in a LONG time! It's probably the busiest I've been in 3 1/2 years. Or, perhaps I just don't remember how busy I was a year and a half ago because I've spent the last year cutting my hours in an attempt to heed the advice of my annual reviewers by delegating more work and just plain taking time to do other things with my life. So, I'm not just WAY TOO busy, I'm also way out of practice working these kinds of hours. And, I've got about a million other commitments that have taken the place of work. So, I'm not really sure where I'm supposed to squeeze in 6-plus hours of sporting events per days.

Oh, and of course, Amazing Race and Survivor have started in the middle of all of this too.

Ahhhhhhh....the complicated things in life. ;)

Tax Refunds R Us...

It's obscene how much I pay in taxes each year...it seems like a lot when I get each paycheck, but when the W-2 comes, the total number is shocking! I feel only slightly better having now done my taxes and knowing that I'm getting a refund from BOTH the Feds and the State. It's going straight into my savings account, but at least it will be MY money and not someone elses. (I know, where's the Democrat in me when I make these comments???? What can I say, I'd rather control where I contribute my money...can't say the Feds or the State do a very good job when they have control of it!)

Very Clever

I've never tried this posting from an email thing through Blogger, so we'll see how this works. A friend of mine sent this to me this week and I thought it was a very clever threading of the hymns we sing each Sunday in church.

Why LDS Women Stress

As Latter-Day Saint women, we are practically obsessed with anxiously engaging ourselves in good causes. Maybe it's subliminal.

Glancing through the hymnal last Sunday I noted that as sisters in Zion, we who are called to serve are all enlisted to go marching, marching forward because the world has need of willing men to all press on scattering sunshine. We wonder if we have done any good in the world today because we have been given much and want to do what is right, keep the commandments, press forward with the Saints, choose the right, and put our shoulders to the wheel going where He wants us to go. However, as the morning breaks high on the mountaintop, truth reflects upon our senses, and while we still believe that sweet is the work, we also realize that we have work enough to do ere the sun goes down.

And thus we ask Thee ere we part, where can we turn for peace?

Blog Title

So, today is one of those days when I'm tempted--as the result of the stupid actions of a boy--to change the subtitle of my blog to read "and all the MEN are merely players." But, I'll be nice and refrain from such childish behavior. Enough said...no further comment!

I know I still owe you all a real update of my blog, but life is busy...and, when it gets really busy, I tend to collapse in the evenings instead of being productive and doing things like catching up on my blog. This Fall, I had alot of fun watching the new show that stands in a class all it's own...Glee. The storyline is pretty cheesy, but the music is so much fun!

My friend Ron gave me the DVD of season 1 for Christmas and it's become my current distraction. The show is much better the 2nd time through...and, it's fun to see the story back-to-back, in sequence!
